Safety First
Even if John proceeded carefully, he knew that it would be stupid to do it without serious preparation. John is the captain of a fire department, so he knows that it could be really dangerous just going down to the underground space. The structure beneath could be unstable, so he devised a plan. However, his plan was not something he could carry out all on his own.

John needed to ask people for help carrying out his plan, so he called up several of his friends. In case something went sideways, he had the necessary back up because he prepared for it. Since John has experience rescuing people, he knew that he would not survive if the old lid collapsed and fell on him. However, before the underground space could be explored, there was a crucial task that they had to complete.
