When Augustus was the emperor of the Roman Empire, he wanted people to be more like the Greek god. Yes, he was quite the egoist. Despite this, the truth is that his physical appearance did not match what Zeus looked like in these works of art.

In those days, Emperor Augustus made his sculptor throw in a couple of details that were true about his real appearance. After all, the finished product would not look like him at all otherwise. When he was alive, he had short hair and a clean-shaven face. However, people from back then preferred complex things over simple ones. He wanted to achieve this with the use of Zeus’s beard and long hair.
