Charles began to feel nervous as the wedding date approached. In her book about Prince Charles, Sally Bedell Smith, a royal biographer, said that Charles was always in love with Camilla Parker-Bowers, his ex-girlfriend. His father forced him to marry Diana and break their engagement. The night before Diana’s reception, Smith claims, the Prince screamed. Charles rekindled his romance with Camilla in front of the whole world after Prince William and Harry’s births.

Designers were frantically running not only because of Diana’s gown but also for another purpose. Diana is a little taller than most people, so she preferred shoes with a lower heel. “Her worst worry was that she wouldn’t be taller than Prince Charles, so the shoes would have to have a short heel because she was too tall — 5ft 10in,” said Cobbler Clive Shilton. Each pair of slippers was incredibly informative and beautiful. 542 sequins and 132 pearls were added to each one-of-a-kind silk slipper, along with a “C” and “D” written on the shoes’ hidden arch and a love heart.
