The Challenge Of Getting There

Attendees had to get to the event, of course. The roads seemed like parking lots since tens of thousands decided to join the festival and flocked to Bethel’s town in New York! Most people decided to just go on foot, and eventually, the roads were closed down. Some people could not even reach the road that led to the festival. “The New York State Thruway is closed, man,” Arlo Guthrie announced on stage. It was open all the time, but to prevent more people from getting to the Woodstock Festival, the state police shut down the Newburgh and Harriman exits.

The Legendary Jimi Hendrix

Only on the third day did Jimi Hendrix come on stage. His legendary version of the Star-Spangled Banner, which many associates with the festival, was treated to festivalgoers. He performed with a temporary crew at Woodstock because the usual band had broken up before the festival. He had to find people, so Hendrix ended up playing Gypsy Suns and Rainbows with the band. It is truly unbelievable that it was the first time they had played together, and it was for such a huge crowd!
