It wasn’t merely her students. Her peers were beginning to pick up about something bizarre about this teacher. She was not deaf, and when she walked through the hallways, she heard whispers. The glances also weren’t lost on her. “Is she still wearing that dress?” Whenever she passed by, the girls would ask each other and giggle. Before they asked her for an explanation, she knew it was only a matter of time. While she knew that it would attract others’ attention, she seriously underestimated just how great it would have an impact.

This Teacher Went Viral Because Of Her Dress

Why Did Her Grey Dress Make This Teacher The Talk Of The Town?

Proper Uniform

When you are a teacher, it is your obligation to wear suitable attire when you are on campus. There are schools, but this is not always the case, that makes teachers wear a uniform. Teachers have to pick what they wear every day in many schools. Julia made sure to wear sensible clothes as an educator and accessorized them accordingly. People were expecting her to have a great sense of style since she’s an art teacher. Her taste in fashion, however, ended up creating quite a buzz.

She was so excited about the work that she could not sleep properly the night prior to her first day. This teacher knew that since she was new, everyone would pay additional attention to her. In Julia, it was only natural for students and other educators to express curiosity. The fact that they zeroed in on her clothes was what made it so strange, though! They observed that something about her outfit was not quite right.

When Julia found that dress on the internet, she immediately wanted it. She knew she was going to wear it at her new job on her first day. It did not really entice that much focus at first. Only after some time did the gossip start. It took everybody, after all, a little while before they realized that something was off.

Minding Her Own Business

Julia knew that in life, not everyone would understand her decisions. The dress might have led to a sort of scandal, and she didn’t feel self-conscious about it. She said, “I don’t really usually think of myself as somebody who really cares that much what people think.” We are glad that this is the case.

A Perfect Fit

She got kids fully prepared for kindergarten and went to school. The new outfit fit nicely, making her happy. Julia felt she had a decent bargain, although that cost her $50. It wasn’t the loveliest outfit that is out, but it was ideal for her goal. What perhaps it might be?

A Hot Day

For her new position, Julia attempted to be positive. She presented herself to her pupils, who were in grades 6 and 7. Until the heat began to go up, everything was going well! She was placed right under the air conditioner, but she still felt hot. Her skin began to flush when she started to notice what was happening. “Oh no… I’m sweating! The horror!” she later said.

It Was Getting Hotter

She felt ashamed and attempted to find a solution to the situation. The teacher found a book and used it to fan herself. The blazing sun, that being said, was a noteworthy opponent. When it was so hot, it was difficult to think straight. The day felt infinite. The students were happy to meet her, but she couldn’t help but feel like she wasn’t doing a great job of making the first impression.

Since all she desired to do was head home, the intros felt unending. Julia just wanted to end the day so that the preceding day she could do a great job. That first day of work was genuinely a challenge to get through. She could eventually, at long last, go to her car and head home. The way the dress stuck to her skin made her feel mortified. She tried to reassure herself that doing better would not be difficult. You know what they say, there’s another day tomorrow! The teacher had her dress washed and left it to dry out.

This was just the start. When she showed up at middle school, the students could tell that Julia was not like all the other teachers. This was the first time the students saw a teacher donning exactly the same thing as the day before. Though it was bizarre, they had no clue it wasn’t the end of it yet.

They Were Talking About Her

During the first few days, not everybody picked up on it. However, once they figured out what was going on, no one else could quit speaking about it. Was the art teacher okay? They didn’t know why she didn’t bother changing her dress. She’d change her boots after all or put on a scarf. It was only the dress that did not change.

She Wore It Everywhere

It is only reasonable to begin to feel more aware of the way you look when you are in middle school. The interest in fashion is explained here! We’re not surprised to hear that the first ones to notice the dress were the female students. They could not believe that every single day Mrs. Mooney wore the same thing. The students also learned that she wore it on campus, but in and around town as well!

Why She Wore The Dress

No one bothered asking Julia, for quite a while, what’s been up with that. However, she noticed that someone was going to bring it up with her sooner or later. She knew she had to answer all of the questions about her outfit that they had. It looked like her peers were beginning to notice it as well, aside from her students.

Didn’t She Have Other Clothes?

Julia had become the talk of the town at William Allen Middle School. She puts on her grey dress every single day of the week. No one understood the reasoning behind this, so everyone began to speculate. Her peers felt concerned. They wondered if she was struggling financially. We are certain that this has happened to her pupils as well. All of us know, however, that teenagers can be ruthless.

Julia could notice all eyes on her, but she just made the decision to do her best at work. She was able to hear whispers and snickers everywhere she went. She also felt that once they noticed the dress, her peers looked at her differently. They acted as if she was a frail individual, but they never brought up the matter with her. At that point, if that was what it took to maintain her job, she was determined to ride it out. By ignoring the elephant in the room, she decided to just keep her head down and stay in her path.

Following The Rules

People seemed to think, as you can imagine, that she’s just a weird person. We bet the parents were also concerned about having their kids taught by someone like that. Some of them evidently even spoke about it to the principal and proposed a panel discussion. Is it really that strange every day of the week to see a person in the same outfit? Well, yeah. Nevertheless, it was not like she had done something illegal.

Was She Struggling?

Everybody began to wonder if there were money issues with the new art teacher. You can, however, be poor and still own more than just a single dress. Since she wore several scarves and shoes to school, this theory was clearly wrong. She would also put on sweaters and other accessories sometimes. She also sometimes wore aprons for her art class. They only felt even more curious about the dress with this in mind.

Others Were Bothered By It

Her grey dress drove a few people crazy. Others thought it was disgusting that she was going to wear it again and again. Some people, on the other hand, thought that for someone who works as an art teacher, it was a strange and boring choice. There were, in fact, a few reasons why she picked that dress. Her reasoning took everyone by surprise when the truth finally came out.

Addressing The Question

It was difficult not to notice the grey dress by her third week. Come on, she used to wear it every day of the week! They all wanted to know what was going on with her. Julia understood that the moment of truth was soon to come. Actually, she was prepared to talk about it if someone could only bring it up with her.

Still Wearing The Dress

The good news is that there was a great idea in mind for Julia. In fact, she arranged the whole thing, and it ended up falling into place. The art teacher shared, “I’m walking down the halls, and they’re like, ‘Is she still wearing that dress?’” It didn’t annoy her. Actually, because her plan was working, it only made her smile.

Her Plan

The art teacher said, “I needed to pick a dress that was going to be versatile because I’m going to be wearing it through the winter, and when we started the school year, it was 90 degrees.” She questioned her students to check out her Instagram page when it was time. It had all the answers they had for her to the questions they had. They started realizing, at long last, the true meaning behind her strange outfit.

An Outfit For A Hundred Days

There was a post on her Instagram page which discussed her plan. The caption read, “For at least 100 days I’ll be wearing this dress, through ceramics projects, blizzards, whatever. Boring? Sure. I love to express myself through what I wear as much as the next American. This is a challenge.” But why did she feel a need for such an ordeal to put herself through? She had numerous reasons behind all this, it later turned out.

Minimalistic Lifestyle

The first reason why, for a hundred days, she decided to wear the same outfit is basic. This merely saves so much time for her! Since she had two toddlers to take care of, it was a good choice to pursue a minimalist lifestyle. Obviously, Julia had better things to do with her time than picking out a dress to wear. However, it was not the only explanation behind her commitment. She also wanted to make a declaration about consumerism.

Slow Fashion

Julia has clarified that she is a slow fashion admirer. Is the opposite of that familiar to you? The term used to describe inexpensive, stylish clothes that are not created to last is fast fashion. This category includes retailers such as Forever 21 and H&M. “We demand lots of clothes cheap, so retailers have to produce in foreign factories where US labor laws don’t protect workers,” explained the art teacher. Her advocacy is the opposite. She wants to promote fair labor practices and items of good quality.

Workers’ Rights

In the interest of saving more money, a lot of clothes are produced overseas. This way, for less money, companies can make more products. The factories, unfortunately, typically recruit children. What makes it even worse is that these underage workers do not have laws to protect them. By buying fewer pieces of clothing, Julia wants to improve things. The main reason behind her project is this, but what else is there?

Carbon Footprints

Julia wants to be a conscious customer, which means she is conscious of the fashion industry’s environmental impact. Clothing consumption is at an all-time high across the globe at the moment. It is sad, but the planet’s resources are being depleted by these unsustainable practices and a lack of environmental regulations. It is her aim to lower her carbon footprint. This is also why she purchased a fair-trade hemp dress from a clothing line called ‘Thought.’ When they learned the truth, how did the others react?

Negative Reactions

A lot of people in general found it disgusting. They claimed that every single day wearing the same piece of clothing was not hygienic. She has attempted to assure them, however, that this is not the case. She said, “I just tell them: this is not a project about hygiene. I wash it as needed. I come to work clean. Lots of people wear uniforms, and they are not assumed to be dirty.” We are glad to hear that!

Food For Thought

“Do we really need so many new outfits? Are we just perpetuating a culture that defines us based on what we’re wearing rather than what we’re doing? What if we spent our energy trying to BE good, interesting humans instead of trying to LOOK good and interesting?” she asked. That’s certainly a good point. People from various parts of the world felt motivated by her project when the story broke out.

Having Supporters

Her Instagram account received more than 6,500 followers after that. Comments kept coming in as well. A supporter chimed in, “All for integrating sustainable strategies into everyday items, what a movement this teacher started!” In her footsteps, some of her pupils and coworkers even followed! 17 teachers actually joined the project. This involves her husband, Patrick. He was also a history teacher and promised to wear the same shirt for one hundred days. It did not take long before the story was heard by local news stations.

Staying The Course

“Some people will not want to listen and prefer their own rationalized [sic] conclusions. Respect that we are all riding on very different journeys through life. Stay friends while you stay the course,” said the art teacher. She as well termed the “ultimate rockstar fiber” hemp and likes the dress’s “deep pockets”!

Buying Responsibly

For each and every single person that comes across her Instagram, she had a challenge. She asked, “The challenge I’m presenting is this: Let’s think before we buy, wear, discard, and buy again. Can we buy clothes used? Buy responsibly? Buy LESS? Learn to sew a few things? Do we really need so many new outfits? Are we just perpetuating a culture that defines us based on what we’re wearing rather than what we’re doing?”

After The Challenge

She has given people more things to think about. After this, what happens? “When this is over, I’ll change more often, but it won’t consume me like it once did. I’ll shop, but I’ll do so mindfully. I’ll have less, but not to this extreme. We shouldn’t let our inability to do everything stop us from doing what we can,” she said.

Finishing The Challenge

On 13 February 2019, her project finally reached a closure. With her fellow teachers and other school employees, she posted this picture of her. It took three days before she managed to reach her target of 100. In the caption, Julia explained, “Turns out I work with a pretty cool staff. Here’s a shot of 17 teachers just in my building who chose to support this project by wearing the same thing for these past three days. Great way to end #OneOutfit100days on #day100.”

Dealing With Criticism

She have been using sections of this dress to create new ones at the end of her objective. Julia spoke of what she did learn from the project as well. “In the face of criticism, petty or otherwise, consistently challenge yourself to respond with equal parts grace and hard evidence. Never get defensive,” she shared. What great tips!

Mending

Aside from that, she started to ask a quastion, “Who mends clothes anymore? With clothes so cheap and nearly disposable, it doesn’t seem worth our time … So much so that this is a lost art. Maybe we should reconsider this. Maybe it’s worth fixing our clothes, so they continue to serve us. Maybe if we spent more on durable, ethically produced clothes, we’d value them more and be more motivated to fix them. Seems like a better option than the landfills.”

Challenging Everyone

She spoke about how she thought about fashion in a press conference. “I like to wear clothes; I like to express myself… I know that we are all looking at what the other person is wearing,” said the teacher, “To wear the same thing every day is uncomfortable because we have this deeply ingrained cultural expectation of changing every day. It’s weird, but because it’s weird, it’s making us all think.” We are sure that this has given you a lot to think about. Do you think you can wear the same thing for a hundred days?

Elizabeth McCarthy

In a different way, a woman called Elisabeth McCarthy decided to go about it. For a hundred days, she not only wore a single dress. No, she also decided to make a great video sharing how the same thing can be done by others. If you are interested in the challenge, you might want to check it out! Like Julia, Elizabeth also wanted to raise awareness of the problem and be more aware of her clothes.

Because she wanted to get the most out of the dress in question, she did not purchase new clothes. This is why, for a hundred days, she brought it upon herself to wear nothing but a piece of clothing. She must have found the perfect dress for the project before she embarked on this journey. It had to be something that was versatile as well as robust. To go with her lifestyle as well, she had to pick the perfect fabric. What has she chosen?

Simple Dress

Ultimately, she went with a simple tank dress from a business called Wool&. If you were curious, it is read as ‘wooland.’ There are four ways to wear the dress. It can be done up as a crew neck, a V-neck, a belt, and without. The fabric dries quickly, so you can hang it dry and wear it in the morning. It’s made of 49 percent merino wool, 18 percent nylon, and 33 percent TencelTM lyocell. It’s great for any weather as well!

All Seasons

The dress is fantastic in the summer, and in the winter it is also easy to layer on with other clothing items. We are sure that you will love how durable it is if you are a practical person. Hundred wears later, it was as good as the day she bought it. The project began when an initiative was initiated by Wool&. It involved challenging women for a hundred days to only wear one dress. To join in, the only thing you had to do was say so. They would send you a dress for the challenge if you were among the first 50 volunteers.

Smooth Sailing

It is awesome to hear that without a hassle it went off. One of the women who took on the challenge was Elizabeth. In hopes of encouraging less consumption and more contentment, the brand kicked it off. We have already heard Julia talk about the greatness of the consumerism problem in this day and age. It feels like all of us are obsessed with buying new items that we really don’t need. The ladies want us all to look at it from a different perspective, even if this has become the standard practice!

A High Price

It comes as no surprise that, in such a society, the cost of living is high. Elizabeth and Julia realized that this is not how we have to keep living. They want the state of things to be improved as much as they can. But they had to check their lives and figure out what they could do about it before they could do that. It was necessary for them to find another way of doing things. This was how the challenge was brought into being.

Long Travels

Elizabeth took up the challenge audaciously and wore her dress for a hundred days. What makes it so amazing is that at the time she was travelling. She carried it to various circumstances and locations. She walked, hiked, and roamed through towns. She shared,  “I definitely realized I don’t need as many things as I have or sometimes it feels like I need.”  We are delighted to hear she has come to this realization!

The Ultimate Comfort

The great news is that, day after day, Elizabeth did not find it really hard to wear the very same thing. She found it, in reality, convenient. She said, “I had plenty of options for cold weather, but I’m so happy in the summer. It’s really, really comfortable.” Maybe you don’t want to take this challenge on your own, but we’re sure you can look at your closet and lead a more simpler life. How much things do we really need, genuinely?

“If you’re thinking about ways to build a more minimal wardrobe, the Avery Tank Dress from Wool& provides both versatility and durability across the seasons. In a time where sustainability and waste is a hot topic, the ability to get more value and use from the items you own is of the utmost importance,” she said in her personal blog. Hearing that she received a free dress by signing up for the challenge is kinda awesome. Apart from that, on her next purchase, she also got a voucher for $100!

Washing

But what about that dress being washed? In most cases, an item of clothing that you plan to wear every day will have to be washed constantly. Here, this is not the case. The dress Elizabeth wore was mostly wool, which is a fabric that is very odor-resistant. It does not very often need to be washed. It boils down to preferences in the end. If you want, you can wash it more often, but it ought to be fine on its own.

Wool Care

We love wool because it doesn’t need to be maintained that much. This, in the long run, will save you a lot of money and time. Since you can wear it in a number of ways, it is also very versatile. You don’t have to do it for a hundred days. What matters is that you are going to make the most of it! Since you have a lot of options on how to style it, we bet that this is not hard to do. This is going to save a lot of closet space as well.
