The Motivation

Sydney was always fascinated with body modification, specifically the tribal women of Thailand and Burma. “I’ve always had a long neck,” said Sydney. “In middle school, they called me ‘giraffe girl.’ Then I saw pictures of the long-necked tribes in Thailand and Burma in National Geographic, and I became fascinated with them.”

Experimenting

After Sydney saw the pictures of a “giraffe girl” on National Geographic Channel, she tried it on her own. She grabbed and cut the coat hanger to coil it around her neck during bedtime. When her parents saw what she was doing, their first reaction was that their daughter was silly, but she persisted. She thought that doing this before she went to sleep would stretch her neck.
