My mother always told me, “If you eat it in less than the time it took you to cook it, you probably didn’t enjoy it.” In a world where everything is fast and the food is even faster, let’s slow down and indulge in some mouth-watering homemade hamburgers. Of course it’s easier to pick up the phone and give a good ol’ boring order to a really disinterested fast-food employee, but making it yourself is not only healthier, it is more delicious by a million galaxies or more (numbers may not be entirely accurate). Cooking homemade burgers at home will change the way you cook, the way you live and the way you decide on your next burger night.
Why Not Just Order?
Seriously now, when it comes to making your own food, as a general rule it’s going to be healthier than buying in a store or from a restaurant. That is of course with the exception of those people who believe that a gallon of oil is the answer to tastier dishes. Fast food might be able to get on your plate quicker than an obsessive mother-in-law will tell you how to raise your kids, but getting rid of the fatty residue it leaves will take almost as long as it would for a Smurf to turn red. Mass-produced food contains far higher amounts of salt, unsaturated fat and sugar which is dangerous to one’s health.
You Choose The Flavors
One of the greatest advantages of cooking anything yourself is being able to control the flavors. No, I don’t mean that you can suddenly start telling those flavors to wash your floors and dust your bookshelves, sorry. I mean you have the opportunity to decide exactly how you want your food to come out. I personally like to have my homemade hamburgers with a kick of rosemary, but to date I still haven’t found a single restaurant that does that. You get to decide how much pepper goes in, how much salt (significantly lower), or whatever you’re throwing into the mix. You’re in control of what goes in, ensuring that you love what comes out.
Let’s Start Making Homemade Burgers
**Prep time – 15 mins** **Cooking time – 10 mins** **Serves 4 (2 of whom are very hungry)**
**Ingredients**
– 2 pounds of ground beef
– 1 egg, beaten
– 2 garlic cloves, chopped
– 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
– 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
– 1 onion, finely chopped
– 1 jalapeño, finely chopped (optional for those who want some faya)
**Process**
1.) Mix the beef with all the ingredients in a large bowl. Make sure to mix it thoroughly so that the flavor will be evenly distributed.
2.) Turn on your stove to the highest setting and place a grill pan on the plate.
3.) Grab a chunk of meat that can fit into the palm of your hand and gently roll it into a ball before flattening it out so it looks like a traditional hamburger patty.
4.) Once you’ve molded as many patties as you can, gently press your thumb into the center of the patties. This way they’ll cook through to the middle.
5.) Gently brush each burger patty with a layer of olive oil on both sides.
6.) Slowly place the patties on the hot grill pan. Make sure to place them down with the side closest to you touching the pan first. This will avoid getting splattered with hot oil.
7.) Let the patties sit for 5 minutes and then turn them over to the other side.
TIP: Don’t keep turning the burger patties over and over. Be patient and let the pan do the work. Turning them once is enough.
Homemade Burgers Are A Dream Come True
Once the homemade burgers are cooked enough for you, take them off and serve them with lettuce, pickles, fresh tomato slices, and anything else you might want. A favorite of mine is to cut a burger roll in half and place the open sides down on the hot grill pan. It will not only prevent your burger from becoming soggy, but it will give your homemade burgers another flavored texture that is to die for! Bon appétit!
