Top Dental Hygiene Tips For Healthier Teeth & Gums

Use Correct Brushing Technique

Most people don’t actually know but you should be brushing your whole mouth. Yes, that’s right -mouth. Brushing should include; gums, teeth, tongue, and pallet. So a good thorough brush is exactly what you need to get rid of bacteria and to keep your teeth looking sparkling. But how do we do this?  Start with your brush at a 45-degree angle to your gums and use short back and forth strokes across the sides and tops of your teeth. Continue to hold the brush vertically and use a few shorter strokes to concentrate on the backs of your teeth where plaque often builds up.

Floss Frequently

As much as brushing your teeth is so often promoted, we also shouldn’t forget to floss! No matter how great your toothbrush is, its not possible for the bristles to clean between the spaces of your teeth. This is where flossing comes in and why it is so important! Flossing assists with getting rid of food residue and other substances that can get trapped between the teeth. If you truly care about good dental hygiene practices- get into the habit of flossing at least once a day.

Drink A Lot Of H20

We all know just how important water is for our bodies and our overall health, and this definitely includes our oral health. Many dentists recommend drinking water after every meal to help wash out all the bad substances that come with eating alcohol, acidic & sugary foods, and fizzy beverages. Additionally, all other drinks and beverages besides water put you at a higher risk of developing cavities.

Consider Using A Mouthwash

Many studies have recently suggested that certain types of mouthwashes can certainly benefit dental health. However, there are different mouthwashes for individuals’ needs which is why you should consult your dentist or oral hygienist first. There are several options available that can help with problems such as bad breath, plaque, and gingivitis. It is also important to remember that a mouthwash by no means substitutes brushing and flossing.

Visit Your Dentist Regularly

Even with all these excellent dental hygiene tips and recommendations, it is still extremely essential to regularly visit your dentist and even the oral hygienist (for a good, meticulous clean). For both normal checkups and cleaning you should see your dentist twice a year. Not only will they be able to remove unwanted bacteria but they can look for cavities and spot potential dental problems as well as treatment solutions.
