When it comes to the topic of politics, it is only natural for things to get heated. The Hollywood Reporter recently featured a study by Morning Consult about the trustworthiness of news anchors. It involved 2,200 American adults, who revealed how much trust they put in the reporters. Overall, the results say that the general public sees cable networks as less trustworthy than their broadcast counterparts. No matter where you fall on the political spectrum, you will be shocked by some of the folks who made it to our list!
Stephanie Ruhle – MSNBC
Let us start with the most trusted news anchor on the list. This means that she did the best among these least-trusted anchors! Only 17% of the respondents said that they trust Stephanie Ruhle “a lot.” She is currently the senior business correspondent of NBC News and anchor of NBC Live. In the past, she was an editor-at-large at Bloomberg News. She was also notable for breaking the story on the London Whale with two of her colleagues!
Katy Tur – NBC
It is actually a tie because Katy Tur also has a 17% trust rating among the respondents. She is now an MSNBC Live anchor, but she was also on Today, Meet the Press, NBC Nightly News, and Early Today in the past. It is also pretty cool that she was once a storm chaser for The Weather Channel! She speaks fluent Spanish and likes a jam ban called Phish. As a matter of fact, she has taken to incorporating their lyrics into her reportage!
Tucker Carlson – Fox News
Are you curious why Tucker Carlson is this high up on the list? He is indeed among the least-trusted people on the list. During the survey, 21% of the respondents said that they do not trust him at all. But conservative viewers offset this since he has a favorability rating of 31% among Republicans. Only 9% of the participants said that the partisan TV personality did not politically “lean” anywhere.
Don Lemon – CNN
Based on the study, CNN viewers do not think much of Don Lemon. In fact, 25% of them do not trust him whatsoever. Despite this, he did receive an Edward R. Murrow Award and had three regional Emmys to his name. Do you know that Fox News hired him after he earned his degree at Brooklyn College? Cool.

On top of that, she used to work at the Wall Street Journal as an anchor and business news correspondent in the ‘90s. Even though she has an impressive resume, only 17% of the participants trust her a lot.
Bret Baier – Fox News
Now serving as the chief political correspondent for Fox News, Bret Baier used to be the chief White House and Pentagon correspondent. He kicked off his industry career by working as a reporter at a local station in Rockford, Illinois. He then worked for WRAL-TV until Fox News successfully hired him as the Atlanta bureau chief. During the study, he earned a trust rating of 17%.
Rachel Maddow – MSNBC
We are sure that you are familiar with her since Rachel Maddow is one of the industry’s biggest names. Even so, this is not necessarily a good thing! As a matter of fact, 26% of the participants said they do not trust her whatsoever. The host of The Rachel Maddow Show on MSNBC grew up in the Bay Area and held degrees from Stanford and Oxford. In 2012, she released a book called “Drift: The Unmooring of American Military Power.” It examines US military policy in different global conflicts.
Sean Hannity – Fox News
Like his Fox News colleague Tucker Carlson, he has also earned the trust of the conservative viewers. This is evident in how 32% of conservative respondents said they trust Sean Hannity “a lot.” But overall, 30% of the respondents say that they lacked complete trust in him. Just like Carlson, he is seen as a very partisan TV personality. Based on the results of the survey, this must be true.
Carson Daly – NBC
Here is a household name in the industry: Carson Daly. Despite his fame, he is not deemed trustworthy by a lot of viewers. Sadly, only 16% of respondents trust him. In reality, the journalist has a long resume. In the past, he hosted the Macy’s Fourth of July show and New Year’s Eve with Carson Daly from Times Square. Aside from that, he was also on MTV’s Total Request Live!.

Apart from that, you might also know him for his award-winning coverage of the Gulf War.
Erin Burnett – CNN
You might know Erin Burnett as the host of a show called Erin Burnett OutFront. It is a news program that shows her reporting live from different parts of the globe. She has previously reported from China, Israel, Rwanda, United Arab Emirates, Mali, and Afghanistan. In general, the focus of her reportage has been the Middle East. When she was working at NBC, Joe Scarborough dubbed her “The International superstar.” In the survey, she received a trust rating of 16%.
Brooke Baldwin – CNN
The CNN Newsroom with Brooke Baldwin host started working at CNN in 2008. She had been based in the world HQ of the network in Atlanta until 2014. After that, she went to New York City and covered big stories! She did a double major in journalism and Spanish during her time at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is the co-host of New Year’s Eve Live with Anderson Cooper.
Bianna Golodryga – CNN
At the moment, Bianna Golodryga is a senior global affairs analyst at CNN. She used to work at ABC’s Good Morning America, Yahoo! News, and CBS’ This Morning. At first, she was thinking of going into finance and even earned a trading license. She changed paths and entered the world of journalism after the market started to decline. Among the respondents of the survey, only 15% said that they trusted the journalist a lot.
Mika Brzezinski – MSNBC
According to the survey, Mika Brzezinski is yet another news anchor that does not enjoy many trusts. In fact, 23% of respondents said they don’t trust her whatsoever. She is the current co-host of MSNBC’s Morning Joe and seems passionate about gender equality. In the past, she has written three books. Two of those are about her journalistic career. Fun fact: she is the daughter of a Polish-American political scientist and diplomat by the name of Zbigniew Brzezinski.
Ari Melber – MSNBC
In case you did not know, Ari Melber hosts The Beat with Ari Melber. Even though he only has a 14% approval rate in the survey, his show is quite popular. To be specific, it sees a monthly average of 13 million viewers on YouTube. This is the highest among the MSNBC shows! A writer for the New York Times once said that he was “an outstanding interviewer, among the best on television.”
Chris Cuomo – CNN
If this name sounds familiar to you, it might have something to do with his “Fredo” incident a few years ago. Let us not dwell on that, shall we? Chris Cuomo is also known for his work on CNN’s Cuomo Prime Time. You might also know him as the chief law and justice correspondent of ABC News, as well as the co-host of 20/20. A fifth of the respondents has a complete lack of trust in him.
Bill Hemmer – Fox News
Yes, Bill Hemmer hosts Bill Hemmer Reports on Fox News. Based on the survey results, only 14% of respondents claim to trust him a lot. Before he joined the team at Fox News in August 2005, he spent a decade at CNN from 1995 to 2005. In those days, he used to host CNN Tonight and American Morning.
Chris Matthews – MSNBC
Among the respondents, only 13% claim to trust Chris Matthews. He made a name for himself by hosting Hardball with Chris Matthews. In March 2020, he announced plans to retire after being accused of making inappropriate comments to a guest on the show a few years ago. In the final episode, he reflected, “The younger generation’s out there ready to take the reins. We see them in politics, in media, in fighting for their causes. They’re improving the workplace.”
Shepard Smith – Fox News
Even though he now works for CNBC and NBC, Shepard Smith is probably best known for the 23 years he spent at Fox News. To no one’s surprise, he received high ratings among conservative viewers. The number is lower when you consider everyone who took part in the survey. His trust rating goes from 31% to 13%! Like others, you might know him as the host of Shepard Smith Reporting.
Juan Williams – Fox News
There are not many registered Democrats on the Fox News lineup, but Juan Williams is one. It is not rare for him to offer counterpoints to the more conservative people on the team. We wonder if this explains why he only has a trust rating of 12% among the respondents. Aside from that, he writes for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post.
Brian Kilmeade – Fox News
Here is another TV personality working at Fox News! Brian Kilmeade currently has a trust rating of 12%. He is the co-host of The Brian Kilmeade Show and Fox & Friends. Did you know that he has written both fiction and non-fiction books in the past? Previously, he came under fire for controversial remarks. This might explain why the results of the survey had been low for him.
Steve Doocy – Fox News
In 1996, Steve Doocy started working at the Fox News channel. Two years after that, he went on to be an anchor for a morning show called Fox & Friends. Even though the show got high ratings, he did not. In the survey, he only got good responses from 12% of the participants! Did you know that, for four years, he was the official correspondent who worked on Times Square for Dick Clarke’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve on ABC?
Chris Hayes – MSNBC
The host of All in with Chris Hayes has made a name for himself as progressive. Besides his broadcast career, he is also an author, an editor at The Nation magazine, and a podcast called Why Is This Happening? Even though he is clearly a competent guy, 18% of the participants do not trust him, full stop. In fact, he is the third spot of the least-trusted anchors!
Lawrence O’Donnell – MSNBC
In the second spot, we have Lawrence O’Donnell. He was only trusted by 11% of the respondents. At the moment, he is busy hosting The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell. What else does he do aside from his broadcast career? As you might already know, he is an actor who has starred and written for the small screen. He has worked on Big Love and The West Wing in the past.
Joe Scarborough – NBC
So, who do we have in the top spot? The answer is none other than Joe Scarborough, who said that 8% of the respondents said they put a lot of trust in. He is the current co-host of Morning Joe, a position he holds with Mika Brzezinski, his wife. Before joining MSNBC, he was a politician and lawyer who served in the House of Representatives under the Republican party for Florida’s first district.
Bill Maher – HBO
This is a TV personality who thrives by challenging the consensus. In 1999, he took part in an interview with Chris Cuomo of CNN. When asked if the media can “police” the elections fairly, Bill Maher revealed, “No, I don’t trust the media.” We are sure that not everyone can handle the issues that challenge popular belief as much as he does.
Diane Sawyer – ABC News
After displaying unusual behavior on the air, Diane Sawyer received a lot of criticism. She was seen lethargic, using slow speech, and slurring her words on television! Knowing this, we can see why people believed that she had not been sober when she was covering the election night all the way back in 2012.
Robin Roberts – ABC’s “Good Morning America”
This TV personality lost her viewers’ trust after she interviewed with Hollywood star Jussie Smollett. It happened after the Empire actor falsified a police report about undergoing a homophobic and racist attack. As you can see, this was more of a matter of association than anything else. It looks like Robin Roberts would have been better off not running this story.
George Stephanopoulos – ABC News
Did you know that George Stephanopoulos used to be an advisor to Bill and Hilary Clinton? He got a lot of flak from the White House for his opposition to their narrative. After what happened, it was only natural that viewers no longer felt like they could trust him. The same thing would happen to anyone!
Scott Pelley – CBS
Tragically, Scott Pelley did not lose the trust of his viewers but of his peers. “I lost my job at the Evening News because I wouldn’t stop complaining to management about the hostile work environment,” he explained. He said that he approached David Rhodes, the president of the news division, and said: “that this hostile work environment couldn’t go on, for women and men. And he told me if I kept agitating about that internally then I’d lose my job”.
