One afternoon a man living in Upstate NY brought his wife to a doctor’s checkup, but when he came to get her something happened that he never expected. After a few hours of waiting for her to finish, he decided to go inside the office. The woman at the desk told him that his wife was gone.

Nowhere In Sight

Her husband returned as he told his wife he would and patiently waited for her to come out of the office. He began to wonder what was going on and where his wife was. After 43 years the case was finally solved.

Nothing More Than A Cold

When he dropped her at the doctor that morning he reported that it was just a normal day. His wife hadn’t been feeling well so he took there to get check out. He informed her that he would be back in an hour but then things took a turn.

The missing woman was named “Flora Stevens” and her husband last saw her on August 3, 1975. She was a young 36-year-old woman who was known for being full of adventure and life. However, one regular afternoon she completely disappeared.

That summer Flora was working at a resort in the Catskill Mountains. It was a beautiful place with around 1,200 rooms. It was the largest complex in the area and the most popular for tourists to stay.

Based on her job application, a detective found that Flora attended Lincoln high school in New York and it was difficult to find much more information. They did see that she was married to Robert Stevens.

Opening The Case

The investigation began upon her disappearance but it was almost impossible to find where she was. While they had many supportive people out looking, their efforts were not successful. What’s more, people were confused about what happened. It was sad to hear that such a nice woman was missing.

The End Of The Road

Flora had no family members alive and it was difficult for the detectives to find where she was from or how she was raised. The clues were lessening and they couldn’t find the answers they were looking for.

No One Could Have Known

Unfortunately, the case was going nowhere and no detectives or community members had a clue where Flora was. They thought the case was closed and never expected it to reopen half a decade later.

Senior Investigator Yan Salomon

Back in 2017, the Senior Investigator of the NY State Police Department named Yan Solomon discovered a lead that could potentially answer many of the questions that so many were searching for. Funny enough, he didn’t even know about the case.

Looming Questions

What he found was related to Flora Stevens’s case, but what was it? There were so much anticipation and so many questions running through people’s minds. After 40 years they assumed she was gone forever!

Skeletal Remains

Unfortunately, Yan Salomon did not deliver the best news. He discovered a missing woman but all he found were skeletal remains and not a woman herself. However, he needed assistance to identify this woman.

Make Some Calls

His next step was to find some coworkers to try and find who this woman was. He called the Sullivan County Sheriff and requested a detective. The woman’s remains were discovered close to the Catskills, but he would need someone’s help to figure out who they belonged to.

Too Hard

Statistics show that about 70,000 grown women go missing each year. He knew he couldn’t get to the bottom of this by himself but together they thought of a great idea that could maybe help them find answers.

Looking For Her

While detective Salomon was certain it would be a challenging case to solve, he managed to gather a team to look through the unsolved cases. He was hoping to find any similarities between those cases and the body he discovered. This way, he could potentially understand whos body he found.

Welcome To Sullivan County

It was a stretch but Salomon was hoping to solve this case. He went to Sullivan county to collect research. He believed that the investigation would be easier if he did nearby searches, which could maybe give him somewhat of a lead.

Was it possible that Salomon now solved the case? He had a hunch so he requested the file from the other detectives to see if he could find living family members to confirm. Too bad, there weren’t any to help him.

After he reported his missing wife, the town went rampant trying to find answers. To their dismay, they could not find much. A decade later her husband passed away and at that point, there was no solving.

How Would He Do It?

Detective Morgan was well aware of how challenging solving the case would be. He had no family members to speak to and he was uncertain how he could prove it was the same woman as the corpse found by detective Salomon.

How Would He Do It?

Her Social Security Number

While searching through the national and local databases he found something incredibly important. Someone was using Flora Steven’s social security number, yet she was nowhere to be found!

Through his research, the detective was able to track the number to the north of Boston. He couldn’t believe that someone was using the social security number. Then he learned this person was living in an assisted living home.

A Different Last Name

Morgan phoned the facility but informed the detective that the woman’s name was Flora Harris and she was living there since 2001. What are the odds a different Flora was using her social security number? Something was fishy!

Detective Morgan with a backup officer traveled to the facility. They were speechless when this is what they found. The morbid case they expected to uncover, did not go in the direction they were expecting.

When he spoke to CBS Boston, Detective Morgan explained that it was a woman with the same first name, same birthday, same SSN, but different last name. After hearing this they needed to know what was going on. They were sure it was a case of missing identity.

Just Her Photograph

To make sure they knew what they were dealing with they brought with them the only picture of Flora they had, from her job at the Catskill Mountains. They arrived at the facility and asked to speak with Flora.

The detectives could not believe what happened next. they showed her the photo and she immediately responded, “that’s me.” They were even more convinced when she pointed out her husband Robert when shown a picture of him. They knew at this moment that they figured it out.

She Couldn’t Remember

To their dismay, they had no way of getting the answers they wanted in terms of her disappearance years ago. Flora suffers from dementia and could not remember anything about the previous 43 years.

An Abusive Husband

The detectives could not explain why she disappeared and explained she suffered from psychiatric illnesses before her disappearance. Her caregiver Mbuva pointed out that Flora had mentioned her husband being abusive and having a terrible marriage with him. However, she only knew parts of the story.

Maybe She Ran

After hearing this, the detectives assumed Flora bought a bus ticket and left to get away from her husband. Unfortunately, Detective Morgan announced that most of the secrets would never be found since they are locked with Flora who doesn’t remember anything.

She Didn’t Want To Be Found

Flora’s caregiver for 10 years was named Festus Mbuva and she said she didn’t think Flora wanted to be found. She added that it was clear an incident occurred in her past that she had no interest in revisiting.

Solved But Unsolved

The sheriff’s department was finally able to close the case when they confirmed Flora Harris as Flora Stevens. During a press release Sheriff, Mike Schiff admitted that most cases like these don’t get solved. It makes sense, what are the odds the answers will turn up after 40 years?

 A Smile And Wave

43 long years passed before anyone understood what happened to Flora Stevens. They thankfully found the missing woman, but the rest of our questions are left unanswered. The detectives left the facility and waved goodbye to the 78-year old woman.

We are so happy that the detectives managed to find Flora but would the case of pre-school sweethearts Matt and Laura be the same? That’s something we aren’t too sure about, let’s wait and see.

One time the school put on a Cinco De Mayo party, and Matt used this an opportunity to woo Laura. The children were focused on breaking the piñata, but Matt tried his best and hit it so hard that he could open it. Matt successfully did it and was hoping it got Laura’s attention.
