Many may not be aware, a chronic illness is a long-term medical condition that requires treatment and management over a long period of time. Most chronic diseases are well known but there are many that are not often given a lot of attention, and therefore people don’t know much about them. Recently, many celebrities have taken to social media and other platforms to publicly disclose illnesses they have been battling. Quite honestly, we think that celebs who are open about their health struggles have played a huge role in raising awareness about many chronic illnesses, and we definitely thank them for that.
Selma Blair – Multiple sclerosis
The actress first shared her Multiple Sclerosis (MS) diagnosis on Instagram in October 2018. Its a condition that affects the brain and central nervous system. She began to notice symptoms for quite sometime before she was actually diagnosed and Blair confirmed that she had felt “off” for years and simply thought it was a pinched nerve. She now walks with a cane and continues to be candid on social media about her chronic illness ups and downs.
Lady Gaga – Fibromyalgia
During an interview with Vogue in 2018, Lady Gaga opened up about her condition, saying, “People need to be more compassionate. Chronic pain is no joke. And it’s every day waking up not knowing how you’re going to feel.” Due to severe pain back in 2017, before being diagnosed she was rushed to hospital with severe pain whilst performing in Brazil. This condition causes pain all over the body, other symptoms include extreme tiredness, muscle stiffness, trouble concentrating and problems sleeping. So far, there is no cure but many of the symptoms can be relieved through medication, therapy, and lifestyle changes. And we think Lady Gaga is doing a great job handling it, right?
Lil Wayne – Epilepsy
Lil Wayne has suffered from epilepsy since childhood. During the past several years, the rapper has been hospitalized for seizures and fits multiple times. Back in 2013, Weezy told Power 106 radio he was epileptic and prone to seizures: “This isn’t my first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh seizure. I’ve had a bunch of seizures; y’all just never hear about it”. The artist has attributed the seizures to his chaotic lifestyle by saying, “The reason being for the seizures is just plain stress, no rest and overworking myself. That’s typical me, though,” Wow, Lil Wayne, we definitely think you should take it easier!
Kim Kardashian-West – Psoriasis
Kim Kardashian- West has been dealing with Psoriasis (an autoimmune skin condition) for many years now. As being one of the most famous and photographed women in the world Psoriasis awareness has definitely been heightened ever since Kim revealed her condition. At first, during an older episode of Keeping up with the Kardashians she was seen freaking out over her skin condition which causes the appearance of crusty, red patches with silver-type flakes. But it seems lately she is not as concerned as before. Go, Kimmy!
