Golf might not be the most popular sport across the world. Most people would consider it to be dull and boring. In the eyes of the other people, it might seem to be a competition, but the golfer would be competing with himself or herself. Aside from that, golf would be considered time-consuming, expensive, and challenging to comprehend. Golf would usually take up to 4 hours per round, and others would not want to spend that much time playing or watching. However, many of those who had gotten to know about Paige Spiranac changed their point of view about golf.

Meet Paige

Paige Renee Spiranac, who was now 27 years old, was born on March 26, 1993. She was an American social media personality and a professional golf player. She had been playing the sport since she was young, and one of the reasons why was because she was born to an athletic family. This was also why those who knew her were not that shocked when she decided to play golf for the collegiate level for both the University of Arizona and San Diego State University.

Paige played college golf for both the University of Arizona and the San Diego State University. She had won the All-Mountain West Conference honors for both the 2012-2013 season and the 2013-2014 season. She was also the one who received the very first title in women’s golf in San Diego State University Aztecs for the Mountain West Conference. As time went by, she worked even more challenging to accomplish more in the field of golf.

Social Media

Paige started to become famous ever since she began to post more trick shot videos on her Instagram account. However, Instagram had also been one of the sources of stress for Paige. In her interview with Bunkered that many netizens had criticized her that she only had a beautiful face but had no real talent. There were even a few who told her to quit golf. Instagram was the one who introduced Paige to the world, but in effect, it raised the expectations for the golfer. Paige said, “When I first turned pro, I think a lot of people thought I was going to be so much better than I was because of my social media profile. They see somebody posting lots of pictures, getting into the public eye, attracting a following, and they assume I’m going to be a great player. I’ve heard a lot of people say that I show a lot of skin or whatever, but, for someone my age, I actually think I keep it pretty tame. There are a lot of other people out – fitness models and so on – who post pictures of themselves in their underwear. Nothing wrong with that, but it’s just not something I choose to do. I guess I had the notoriety without the results, but golf’s a game where you lose more than you win. It’s a cliché, but it’s true. It just doesn’t make it any easier to stand in front of a lot of people and have them watch you fail.”

Missing Out

Paige was now clearly a social media personality. To be honest, those who still had not followed her Instagram would surely be, missing out. Following her on social media would be worth it especially for those who needed help with their golf tips and tricks. She also used her fame to her advantage. She decided to promote an anti-bullying campaign and also to continue to fight for women’s right to be confident in their skin, especially when presenting themselves or interacting with others.

Changing Paths

Paige’s career in gymnastics ended when she was just 12 years of age. There were two occasions when she fractured her kneecap. For someone so young and full of dreams, she was clearly devastated and mourned for around a week or two. After her mourning, she discussed with her parents what sport she should next focus on. Paige said, “Being an athlete was so important to my self-identity that even at that age, I knew I needed to find another sport quickly.”

Bullied

There was another reason why Paige decided to quit her gymnastics training. Because of a rare scalp condition, she had no choice but to have a short bowl cut hairstyle. She was always mistaken as a boy. In an interview, Paige said, “I was this weird kid with a bunch of problems, and they all shunned me. I would sit down at a table, and every other kid would stand up and move. At recess, one of their favorite games was to throw rocks at me. It was like in a movie except that was my life.”

Paige had divided her time between Monument, Colorado and Scottsdale, Arizona. The parents of Paige were also convinced that their daughter could not survive middle school by herself. Because of this, it was decided that she would be homeschooled. This also gave her more time to provide more focus on her training. She was still homeschooled while she fought in the Future Collegians World tour.

Early Days

As she was still recovering from her fractured bone kneecap, she fell in love with the idea of becoming a golfer. She started to play as a junior golfer in high school. She won 5 tournaments out of 7 tries for the junior golf circuit in Colorado. This included the Connecticut Women’s Golf Association Junior Stroke Playback last 2010. Later, she would become the captain of the women’s golf team in college.

College

Before she studied at San Diego State University, Paige Spiranac first went to a different school. At a young age, the famous golfer received a scholarship from the University of Arizona. She came from a small town in Colorado, so her first time in Arizona became a culture shock for Paige. From her childhood days, she did not spend that much time with the people of her age.

Freshman

During Paige Spiranac’s freshman year, she competed in three different events for the Arizona Wildcats. This was for the 2011-2012 season. Her best score for that season was a 73. She reached her best score twice in just a single tournament. This was for the Windy City Intercollegiate. However, the University of Arizona felt wrong. Paige said she had become the victim of bullying from other girls and that the other female athletes even spread nasty rumors about her.

Change Of Environment

Since Paige felt miserable at the University of Arizona, she decided to transfer to San Diego State University for her sophomore year. She badly needed a change in the environment, and for the first time in her life, she finally felt welcomed by her acquaintance. The atmosphere was also ideal for her. And her coach, Leslie Spalding, saw the potential in her and was so sure that Paige had the potential to be a great golfer. It was a good thing that she transferred because it proved that San Diego State University was the right one for Paige.

And this time, when she competed for the Mountain West Championship, she finished in the top 10. This was a good thing for someone who was still just a newbie in the world of golf. It was clear that the golfer would have a bright future within the field.

And by the time her senior year came, Paige was assigned as the captain of her golf team. Leslie Spalding said, “Paige had a profound impact on changing the culture of the team.” Her coach also added that the golfer had a contagious work ethic and personality. The golfer ended her college career with a bang. San Diego State University Aztecs never won a conference in women’s golf, but during Paige’s time, they were the favorites for the Mountain West tournament. She led the Aztecs to their first-ever Mountain West Conference Championship in the history of San Diego State University.

Put A Ring On It

After their first date, Paige knew that she and Steven were meant to be. She adored how old-fashioned Steven was. She also did gentlemanly stuff like opening the door for her and always bought her flowers. She found these actions to be charming. These were traits that no other man in her life had. And just only a few weeks of dating, Steven already proposed to her in Dubai during her invite to a pro tournament.

A Swing At Tennis

When her career in gymnastics ended, Paige Spiranac gave tennis a try. Her aunt was a pro tennis player, and it was easy for her to be professionally coached. She tried taking lessons from her aunt, but the sport felt too dull for her. She was not that excited about becoming a tennis player, unlike how she felt when she was still a gymnast.

Ronda Rousey Is Her Idol

Almost every golfer had some figure that gave them the inner spark. Paige Spiranac had looked up to Ronda Rousey as her role model and mother figure. Even though her idol was not a golfer, she still hoped to follow in the wrestler’s footsteps. She had called Ronda Rousey a superwoman and had added a few of the wrestler’s unique touch into her gameplay.

Points Docked

Paige was invited to a professional golf tournament in Dubai because of her sudden surge in popularity and influence on social media. However, she unconsciously checked her phone and even posted a photo on Instagram before swinging. The judges saw her fiddling with her phone. They decided to deduct her score for a few points, and because of the points that she missed, she did not make it to the next round.

This might be a little difficult to believe, but there were times when Paige Renee Spiranac received phone calls and multiple text messages from anonymous people that bullied her. Some bashed her outfits while some said extreme things as she should kill herself or that they would help her do it right there on Dubai Masters. And this was only because of her tight, cleavage-baring outfits. Paige had said in an interview, “I was harassed, my family embarrassed.”

The aim here was to speak against bullying and low self-esteem. She decided to share some of her experiences during childhood and how she was in a better position now. She hoped that by opening to others about what happened to her in the past, she would be in a better position to help others who were being bullied.

Golf Digest Contract

Let’s be honest here. Golf Digest offered a contract to Paige Spiranac even though she had never won a single LPGA tournament. This was mainly because Golf Digest was getting tired from the fact that the other golfers did not bring in mush sales. What they cared about Paige Spiranac was her look. Because of her outfits, it brought in a lot of traffic to the website. They did not think twice about making her sign the contract.

Even though our favorite golfer was already engaged, this did not stop the other men that were still trying to woo her. Some still sent her gifts and gave marriage proposals. Don’t Expect A Wedding Anytime Soon

Paige had been very vocal about the fact that she had no plans on marrying any time soon. Paige and Steven had been engaged since 2016, but there was still no news of their wedding ceremony. She had rarely posted about Steven online and had not talked much about him on her recent YouTube videos. It might be because the couple preferred to keep their lives private, or they might have some nondisclosure agreements about their personal and public lives.

When Paige was still a young little girl, she had severe asthma and allergies to the point that she had to use her inhaler. She even had to be rushed to the hospital for some of her asthma attacks because she had difficulty in breathing. Because of this, she was not allowed to go to any places with pets. She did not experience sleepovers during her younger days because her mom even had to check in on her every night to make sure that her breathing was normal. Aside from asthma, she also had a rare hair condition where her hair was always falling out. Her medical issues were one of the causes of her being bullied.

Some Aren’t On Board

Paige Spiranac said that she had received a bad reputation because of her outfit choices. She had been subjected to awful name-calling simply because of the way she dressed herself up. Paige even claimed that she had been denied from helping in some charity events because of her reputation. She had only wanted to help those who were less fortunate than she was, but this was a heavy blow for Paige. She hoped that the other women would not experience such things. In answer to her being bullied, she posted on Twitter, “I also want to make it clear I’m not saying poor me or playing the victim. I know I’m going to get hate for what I wear and speaking out. I’m just facing it head-on now instead of worrying about being accepted. I will never change myself so that I can fit in.”

Paige Spiranac had always wanted to encourage women all around the globe. In one of her photos for Sports Illustrated, Paige captioned the photo, “Different women feel empowered in different ways. After this experience, I’ve never felt so comfortable and confident in my skin. I feel empowered. The goal is for women (and men) to love themselves and love the body they are in. And that journey to self-love will be unique to every individual, so we should not judge or be critical of their path to get there but show support since it can be a hard and emotional journey. I want women to feel empowered, sexy, and strong. And if that’s sitting on a motorcycle in a bikini, great! Or if you feel more confident in another way, then great! It’s about showing love and support to everyone. However, they decide to live their life.
